Vinyl Lives!

At a glance, the far corner of the main floor of J&R Music looks familiar to anybody old enough to have scratched a record by accident. There are cardboard boxes filled with albums by the likes of Miles Davis and the Beach Boys that could be stacked in any musty attic in America.
But this is no music morgue; it is more like a life-support unit for an entertainment medium that has managed to avoid extinction, despite numerous predictions to the contrary. The bins above the boxes hold new records — freshly pressed albums of classic rock as well as vinyl versions of the latest releases from hip-hop icons like 50 Cent and Diddy and new pop stars like Norah Jones and Lady Gaga.
And with the curious resurgence of vinyl, a parallel revival has emerged: The turntable, once thought to have taken up obsolescence with reel-to-reel and eight-track tape players, has been reborn.
J&R Music, at 23 Park Row southeast of City Hall Park, now carries 21 different turntables at prices ranging from $85 to $875. Some are traditional analog record players; others are designed to connect to computers for converting music to digital files.
Rachelle Friedman, the co-owner of J&R, said the store is selling more vinyl and turntables than it has in at least a decade, fueled largely by growing demand from members of the iPod generation.
“It’s all these kids that are really ramping up their vinyl collections,” Ms. Friedman said. “New customers are discovering the quality of the sound. They’re discovering liner notes and graphics.” In many instances, the vinyl album of today is thicker and sounds better than those during vinyl’s heyday in the 1960s and 1970s.
Sales of vinyl albums have been climbing steadily for several years, tromping on the notion that the rebound was just a fad. Through late November, more than 2.1 million vinyl records had been sold in 2009, an increase of more than 35 percent in a year, according to Nielsen Soundscan. That total, though it represents less than 1 percent of all album sales, including CDs and digital downloads, is the highest for vinyl records in any year since Nielsen began tracking them in 1991.

Brandon Jennings drops 55!!!!
Ok, so I’ve been giving Jennings props on my blog since last year right after he graduated from high school. Peep my thoughts on him here and here.
Ever since I’ve seen him play at the Rucker, I’ve kept tabs on him. It was an honor to draft him with my last pick in TCK Fantasy basketball. I wish I got to see the full game and not the highlights, but I spent the night getting lost with Angelo then watching the Cotto-Pacman fight with Vazo and Chell TCK.
Seeing that 55 on my fantasy stat sheet was like a late birthday gift. I’m very proud of Brandon and hope his team continues to win and that he continues to break and set records.
Brandon Jennings for Rookie of the Year!
Keo: Piecebook Reloaded
Peace to Keo. He’s been cranking out a lot of great product recently. Actually for a while now, but u get what I mean, Gene.

Is The Scratch Deck The Dj Hero Killer?
Dj Hero’s reign on the top may be short like leprechauns as its first competitor readies for deployment. Say Word.
I remember when the Mark Ecko video game came out and writers everywhere were losing their mind, talking about Graffiti sellouts and yadda yadda. I was down from day one and I loved that game. It was fun and didn’t do any more damage to the artform than the internet had. There were authentic writers in the game, its development and in its advertising. Not to mention, Ecko threw a legendary block party and put up his money in court against our power hungry billionaire mayor and won! Rest in peace Roc Raida.
Dj Hero strikes a different chord with me though. I will reserve judgment on the game itself until I get to play it, but I can already envision walking into my favorite bar/lounge and seeing some goon trying to recreate scenes from Juice with a damn video game.
The advertising of the game is also suspect since it centers around Jayz and Eminem rather than real djs. I hear they have Jazzy Jeff going around the country promoting and demonstrating the game, so they could have easily had him or some other renown dj’s in the commercials. I guess the developers and advertisers aren’t on the same page..

Technology causes kaos. I remember hanging in a bar with Opie a few years ago and some lame was djing with 2 ipods and a mixer blending Lil Mama’s “Lip Gloss” song with Queen’s “We Will Rock You” thinking he was killing something other than my eardrums..
AnyWu, it appears that all of these companies are still using the advanced technology and patents created by the Rza.
Shout out to my dude Jay Smooth whe delved deeper into the legend of the replicator. You can peep that classic video here.
Think about it.
Random thought.
The Jigga man rolling around on the Yankees float is no where as cool as when Special Ed was floating around Flatbush.
Peace to Doves Tck, Solace and Pay Jay.
NYC Halloween 2009: Part 1
It was a rainy night so I didn’t go to the Village Halloween parade as planned. Luckily, there was a great costume party at the STAY lounge and I had a blast. Peace to all the party people that were there. It was the best Halloween party I’ve ever been too. A close second was Doug’s spooky Queens jam a few years back.
